I don’t know about you, but whenever I harken back to what my mom made for dinner when I was a kid, I know the memory isn’t complete until I remember something (anything!) hot and a stack of white bread. She was a great cook, but by the time I was solidly in my teens she was definitely phoning it in. Why? Because it always took time in a hot kitchen and usually was received with bored faces.

Here’s a dinner idea for those nights that you just need to feed the herds but don’t have the energy to stand over the stove. Simply gather your picnic favorites, put on one big platter, and serve family-style. While this meal is great for dinner at home, it would also work well (duh) at any of Milwaukee’s great music in the park events. I like Chill on the Hill the best but still think fondly of Jazz in the Park. What’s your favorite?

This recipe uses ingredients you either had already or definitely can use elsewhere in the week.

Bonus two:

You can really get into the picnic theme for this dinner and dress down the table. Use lunchboxes, paper plates, or simple napkins to be on point and make it easier on the clean-up crew.

  1. Let's start with the meat and cheese. If you're feeling fancy, you can roll up the deli pieces or simply lay on the platter. Wash the fruit and add to platter. Add crackers to plate and put the dip into a bowl (or just use the one it came in.)
